“Where does it all go?” It’s the question we get on almost every job, usually while a customer watches their old dining set ride away. Fair question — and for most junk removal companies, the honest answer is “the transfer station.” Here’s our actual answer, load by load.
Stop 1: Local charities (the good stuff)
Every load gets sorted before anything gets dumped, and usable items come off first: furniture without damage, working appliances, kitchenware, tools, household goods. Those get delivered to local charities in the Portland area, where they end up back in homes instead of buried in a landfill.
And here’s the part that surprises people: donating saves you money. We discount your bill for donate-able items — because donation costs us less than landfill fees, and we’d rather split the savings with you than pretend the difference doesn’t exist. Good couch, lower bill, somebody’s first apartment gets furnished. Everyone wins.
Stop 2: Recycling facilities (the useful stuff)
Metal, appliances, electronics, clean wood, cardboard — all of it comes off the truck next. Fridges and freezers go to facilities with certified refrigerant recovery. E-waste goes to proper electronics recycling (it’s illegal in Oregon landfills anyway). Scrap metal becomes somebody’s raw material. Recyclable-heavy loads earn discounts too.
Stop 3: The transfer station (the true junk)
What’s left after donation and recycling — the broken, the moldy, the genuinely done — goes to Metro’s transfer stations, where we pay disposal fees by the ton so you don’t have to stand in that line yourself. On a typical load, this ends up being a smaller share than most people expect.
Why we work this way
Partly because it’s right — this is our community too, and a couch in a landfill helps nobody. Partly because it’s honest economics — sorting takes us more effort, but donation and recycling cost less than dump fees, and passing that back as discounts means doing the right thing is also the cheap thing. “Donation-first” isn’t a marketing sticker; it’s literally the order we unload the truck.

Ask us when you book — on jobs with significant donations, like estate cleanouts, we can document what was donated.
What if the charity won’t take my item?
Then it moves to recycling or disposal and we still handle it — you never end up with a bounced item back on your porch, which is the classic donation-pickup horror story.
Do you take things that can’t be donated OR recycled?
Of course — that’s the junk part of junk removal. The sorting just means less of your money and your stuff ends up at the dump.
